Case Study: First Juice

Food & Beverage

A HEALTHY SERVING OF INGENUITY

David Glasser’s daughter, Rachael, made a request, “May I have a drink before bed?” All he had in the fridge was juice, but that night, a fresh idea was born.

“Other fruit juices are too sugary,” said Glasser, founder and CEO of First Juice. “I wanted to create a juice that tastes great but doesn’t cultivate a child’s sweet tooth.”

Glasser also wanted his juice to help parents. That meant the package had to be nearly impossible to spill. And that was the assignment he presented to TricorBraun.

Design Innovation

TricorBraun immediately began trying to figure out how to accomplish what had eluded so many others—a disposable, spill-resistant sippy cap at a reasonable price.

“Not long after we began the design process,” said Mark Erickson, TricorBraun Packaging Consultant, “I received an e-mail stating that TricorBraun had become the exclusive U.S. rep of Weener Plastics Packaging Group, a new German company with a patented process for a cost-effective valve application.”

“TricorBraun has been fantastic to work with. I feel like they share the passion for what I’m doing. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”
– David Glasser, founder and CEO

The custom cap and overcap that TricorBraun and Weener Plastics created use the same valve technology that’s in a sippy cup. They coupled this innovative cap with a stock bottle that was thick enough so that children can’t squeeze it. “TricorBraun’s cap is so critical because moms are the most time stressed people on the planet,” said Glasser. “The valve only opens and closes when it’s sucked on, and children can’t squeeze the bottle. The whole thing works together amazingly well.”

Project Complexity

An enormous amount of research and testing went into the First Juice package. The overcap and enclosure were tested for choking hazards, the ergonomics were measured and numerous iterations of the sealing mechanism were tried.

“We attacked every area of this package intensely,” said Erickson. “From the induction liner to the nozzle, we made nearly a hundred models.”

Two-and-a-half years later, First Juice was ready for the masses.

Business Growth

"Whole Foods and Babies "R" Us each told me that if we could make everything work, they would sell First Juice chainwide," said Glasser. “That illustrated to me the strength of the idea behind the juice and packaging.”

In their first launch year, First Juice was a big hit and exceeded expectations. The success of the sippy cap has given Glasser the determination to build upon this unique product and package to make way for the future expansion of First Juice.
