TricorBraun’s Rigid Packaging Expertise Featured in Eco-Plastics in Packaging

TricorBraun was recently recognized in Eco-Plastics in Packaging (Issue 289, “Balancing Act”) for its leadership in addressing key trends shaping the rigid packaging industry. The feature highlights how companies are meeting the demands of premiumization, recyclability, and tariff impacts and includes an in-depth interview with Rosalynd Resendiz, Vice President of Supply Chain at TricorBraun.

Rosalynd shared insights on how TricorBraun helps brands navigate challenges from tariffs to sustainability expectations, guiding them from material selection to final packaging design.

Tariff Impacts on Packaging

As well as sustainability demands, tariffs are also having an impact on the rigid plastics packaging sector, suggests Rosalynd Resendiz, vice-president of supply chain for packaging manufacturer TricorBraun.

“One of the big trends we're seeing in rigid packaging is the impact tariffs are having on PET, which is largely imported, driving up costs. Therefore, some brands may consider migrating to HDPE as a more cost-effective alternative. While cost is always a consideration, resin choice typically comes down to barrier properties and performance. At the same time, trends such as the onshoring of production and softer demand for PET could potentially help stabilize or reduce PET prices in the future.”

Responsible Packaging Expectations

Another major trend noted by Resendiz is the growing expectation for responsible packaging. Legislation, retailers, and consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable and circular packaging solutions, which in turn is driving innovation across the rigid packaging industry.

“At TricorBraun, we apply the Association of Plastic Recyclers APR guidelines and the Golden Design Rules to deliver more recycle-friendly rigid packaging solutions for our customers,” Resendiz adds.

Scaling PCR and Material Guidance

That increased use of PCR is apparent in TricorBraun’s activities within its rigid packaging portfolio.

“We're scaling PCR content across rigid formats, turning circular materials into brand advantages without compromising durability, shelf impact, or regulatory compliance,” Resendiz says.

“When consulting with our customers, TricorBraun provides guidance on recycled content, mono-material solutions, and other responsible packaging options available in the market. We have more than 1,000 supplier partners offering sustainable solutions and can support a wide range of materials. We are also material-agnostic; whether a customer prefers paperboard, aluminum, glass, or plastics, we can help them incorporate PCR content into their packaging while meeting performance and design requirements.”

Lifecycle Analysis and Regulatory Compliance

Additionally, Resendiz says TricorBraun uses a lifecycle analysis software tool that allows it to analyze the true environmental impact of a package, compare it to alternatives, and empower customers to make informed decisions.

PCR content in packaging is not just a “nice to have” for customers — in some US states, for example, it’s also a requirement to meet regulatory demands.

“Today, several states have implemented minimum PCR content laws, EPR legislation, and measures such as California's Bill 343, along with other key bills,” says Resendiz. “While these initiatives are a positive step, greater uniformity across states - or federal guidance — would make compliance easier and reduce confusion for brand owners as they navigate the varying requirements. TricorBraun leverages its deep expertise to work closely with customers, guiding them through the complex regulatory landscape and helping them meet current requirements while advancing their sustainability goals.”

Lightweighting and Design Innovation

Light-weighting continues to contribute to those sustainability goals, too, adds Resendiz:

“We're continuing to see brand owners light-weighting wherever possible, as this simple shape or form change can have a dramatic impact on a company’s bottom line. TricorBraun offers novel, custom lightweight packaging designs that reduce plastic use while maintaining full functionality.”

“We also create bespoke packaging solutions for our customers that support their sustainability goals and help their products stand out, whether on retail shelves or in the e-commerce space. Our lightweight designs are engineered to optimize distribution efficiencies while still ensuring product protection.”

Alongside light-weighting, the company is also witnessing a trend towards reducing overall pack size through methods such as more concentrated formulas and smaller closures, further supporting sustainability efforts.
