Anatomy of a Bottle: Neck Finish
Part 2 in our Anatomy of a Bottle Series is focused on neck finish: the part of the container that secures the closure. A container and its corresponding cap must have matching finishes. For example, a 20-400 bottle will only accept a 20-400 closure.

S - Thread Start
The distance from the top of the finish to the top of the thread start
L - Bead Locating Dimension
The distance from the top of the finish to the top of the bead
H - Finish height
The distance from the top of the finish to the intersection of the projected "T" diameter and the shoulder slope
T - Thread Diameter
Major diameter - outside measurement across threads
E - Exterior Diameter
Minor diameter - measurement across the threads
W - Bead Width
Width of the neck bead
I - Inside Diameter
Inner diameter of the bottle neck
